Description
Maara Roa, the Long Garden, is a 100ha area in the Cannons Creek Valley, a catchment on the northern slopes of the Belmont Hills that lies between Hutt, Wellington and Porirua cities. 40ha of tawa-kohekohe remnant forest in Conservation Covenants, another 40 in bush regenerating through gorse, and 20ha currently in rough pasture, are being restored under a Plan jointly prepared by the Friends and Greater Wellington. Access points are from park entrances in Porirua City and 5 km off Highway 1 near Tawa, with tracks around the site available to the public. An easy 10 minute walk from either road, the restoration area is very accessible to urban volunteers from the Wellington metropolitan area. The Friends offer various activities including treeplanting and care, possum control, helping in our nursery jointly operated with Porirua College, home growing of seedlings, seed collection, site monitoring, guiding walks in the summer, and voluntary organisation management including public relations, website management, promotion, and many practical tasks. The outdoor activities are suitable for families with children 10 years upwards, and for people seeking work experience. All the work is seasonal in nature, and part-time. The organisation has no paid staff , relying on local volunteers who are in conservation for the long term. Moderately hilly area; muddy tracks in winter; easy access for average person; 10-15 minutes walk from suburban road.
