Description
Living Legends is managing 17 native tree planting projects throughout New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011. We are working with provincial rugby unions and community groups for each planting, and we’d love overseas visitors and locals to join us in supporting and enjoying our natural heritage. As well as that we are honouring our Rugby Legends – each planting site is dedicated to a New Zealand rugby icon. The Ahuriri Estuary, and associated bordering saltmash, is a unique and valuable habitat resulting from landform changes associated with the Napier earthquake. The water body is the only significant estuary on the North Island’s east coast between Ohiwa Harbour in the Bay of Plenty and Cape Palliser. An important habitat for wading birds and other native fauna it offers significant opportunity for revegetation and ecosystem enhancement. Its closeness to Napier city provides great potential for community use and involvement in its development. The work already undertaken east of the proposed planting site provides a popular walking area and shows the value of native plantings in enhancing this environment. The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Legend is Ian MacRae, who as well as playing for the All Blacks served the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union with distinction as player and then later as an administrator and a coach.
