Some tips for energy efficiency

Wow, it is interesting about the energy saver light bulbs, and how it is better to leave them on if you are out of the room for less than 15 minutes, I bet lots of people don't know that!

There are a variety of simple steps one can take to be more environmentally friendly in their day-to-day lives. Although we are told to turn off lights when we leave a room, if you are using modern compact fluorescent bulbs, switching them on and off can reduce their lifespan by as much as 70 percent. So, if you are using these bulbs, leave them on if you are out of the room for less than 15 minutes. Dirty paper or cardboard that has been used to contain food is often not recyclable, this is not an issue for cans and bottles however. The most fuel efficient way to drive is to not drive! Hybrid cars may be using 20% less petrol but they are still using petrol! Keep your tyres inflated as under-inflated tyres can use up to 6% more fuel. Each extra 25 kilograms of luggage also decreases fuel efficiency by 1 percent. Avoid short car trips, a cold engine uses twice as much fuel as a warm one. Turn appliances off when they are not in use! A television that uses 18 watts while switched on, for example, may still use 17 watts when on standby! Comments on these and further tips are well appreciated!
